The U.S. Department of Solar Energy Decathlon is a special event competition made up of 10 contests to challenge student-driven teams to design and build their own full-size, solar powered houses. The selected winner of the competition features the team that blends design excellence and smart energy production with innovation, market potential, and the use of water and energy efficiency. The Solar Decathlon 2017 offers an extensive learning experience using the latest technology, energy efficient designs, and clean energy technologies to create smart home solutions.

Through hands-on experience and unique training, the students are equipped to enter the clean energy workforce to support a new, environmentally-friendly future. Since 2002, the international competition has raised awareness about clean energy and the newest technologies and solutions that are used in Solar Decathlon homes to advance the residential building industry.

As a successful outreach program of the U.S. Department of Energy, this provides students with unique training to help them in the future. By educating students about the latest in energy-efficiency, they can help move the world toward a more sustainable future. Their newly found knowledge will help to demonstrate to the public about energy-efficient construction, design, and appliances to help promote renewable energy production.

Since the start of the program, more than 141 teams have been involved to help establish a worldwide reputation while positively impacting more than 18,000 collegiate participants. It has helped to educate the public on a global level regarding the benefits, affordability, and availability of clean energy solutions.
